“Yes you absolutely need self-hosted WordPress for your blog!”
“If you use WordPress.com to build a free website or blog, they’ll steal your content!”
No, you don’t and no they won’t.
Yeah, you read that right. No you don’t absolutely need self-hosted WordPress to start your blog.
Or, “No GAWD!”, as my boy Funky Dineva says.
WordPress.com, which allows you to create a free website or free blog, has been demonized like moonshine and rock n’ roll unnecessarily, in my view. Why do I say this? After all:
- Self-hosted WordPress lets you run ads and sell things.
- Self-hosted WordPress lets you customize your blog in a seemingly infinite number of ways.
- Self-hosted WordPress doesn’t restrict your links, embeds, services,etc.
Wait, isn’t that blogging heresy?
Don’t all the Hypey McHyperson, online marketing
gurus hustlers preach “self-hosted WordPress or perish?”
Yes some do. So, what’s the deal?
This free vs self-hosted myth just confuses and intimidates people who are starting out, and I think that is unfair.
To help straighten this out, I made this video where I “snatch the wig off” (debunk) this myth about self-hosted WordPress vs free websites or blogs once and for all.
As I mention in the video, here’s what I want you to do:
Leave a comment below and let me know your opinion on this.
Have you ever been discouraged from creating a free website or blog using WordPress.com?
Have you been pushed into self-hosting before you felt you were ready?
Oh, and in case you’re wondering what a real wig-snatching looks like…
